Meeting the needs of a diverse district

Fond du Lac School District serves a diverse student population with a wide range of learning needs. While every student has access to a device, the digital learning experience was inconsistent. Teachers were using a variety of tools to support their students, but many of these tools lacked the accessibility and flexibility needed to support all learners.

As a result, students often faced barriers when trying to engage with curriculum content. Many required accommodations that were time-consuming to deliver. Feedback loops were delayed. Collaboration was limited. Teachers spent extra hours managing paper-based workflows and creating multiple paper versions of assignments to meet different needs.

Selecting an inclusive and scalable solution

The district needed a single platform that could serve each and every learner, streamline teacher workflows, and integrate with existing systems like Google Classroom, Seesaw, etc. Kami provided the accessibility tools, collaboration features, and ease of use that teachers and students needed.

With Kami, students could use text-to-speech, voice typing, or translation features within the same shared documents used by their peers. Teachers could give audio and video feedback directly on assignments. The platform offered one consistent learning experience for all, without requiring separate tools or workflows.

Implementing Kami through a strategic district-wide plan

Kami was introduced as part of a three-year implementation strategy. In the first year, the focus has been on foundational training, early adoption, and using data to guide professional development. Teachers have received support through a combination of live sessions, coaching, and self-paced learning, with monthly usage reports helping to identify trends and tailor training where it’s needed most.

Gina plays a central role in driving adoption across Fond du Lac. She regularly supports teachers through instructional coaching, PLCs, and onsite implementation support. In one example, she publicly recognized early adopters who completed self-paced Kami training, celebrating their commitment in a December staff spotlight on LinkedIn. This kind of grassroots encouragement has helped build momentum and foster a culture of shared learning across schools.

Adoption continued to grow as teachers experienced how Kami simplifies differentiation, reduces grading time, and increases student engagement. One high school social studies teacher, for example, used Kami to support district curriculum delivery—a strategy that spread to other grade levels and was even recognized by the textbook provider as a model for best practice.

Real results for students, teachers, and the district

For the district, Kami has played a meaningful role in Fond du Lac’s broader shift toward inclusive and sustainable digital learning. As Fond du Lac has defined processes and systems focused on student achievement, tools like Kami have played a part in  Fond du Lac’s move from the bottom 10 percent in state rankings to the 51st percentile. These changes have contributed to measurable progress alongside reduced paper use and more efficient classroom workflows.

For students, Kami improved access, engagement, empowerment, and independence. In particular, its features supported students in developing greater self-sufficiency over time. One highlighted student reduced their writing support from 150 minutes per week to just 10 and executive functioning support from 300 minutes to 30. That’s 246 hours of regained instructional independence in a single school year.

Multilingual learners now access content in their own languages and participate more confidently in class. Students with Individual Education Plans use Kami tools to annotate, highlight, listen to instructions, and submit work in ways that meet their needs. Kami helps more students learn alongside their peers, increasing time in inclusive settings. This gives all students more opportunities to engage in classroom discussions and benefit from shared lessons. Fond du Lac’s goal is to build strong, inclusive instruction from the start, ensuring every learner has a solid foundation before needing additional support.

For teachers, Kami saves time and simplifies differentiation. They can embed supports directly into assignments and provide fast, multimodal feedback without creating separate resources. Teachers also use Kami to co-plan lessons, share ideas, and lead professional learning across teams.

Kami is more than a digital annotation tool. It is a platform that simplifies differentiation, supports all learners, and helps teachers do more with less. For Fond du Lac, implementing Kami wasn’t about adding another app. It was about choosing one tool to bring equity, efficiency, and engagement together.
