{"id":25914,"date":"2023-04-19T09:52:50","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T21:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kamiapp.com\/?p=25914"},"modified":"2023-04-19T10:11:06","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T22:11:06","slug":"kindergarten-classroom-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.kamiapp.com\/blog\/kindergarten-classroom-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Kindergarten Classroom Rules to Help Your Class Run Smoothly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kindergarten students may be young but, even in the first year of school, it\u2019s still important that they learn to follow some basic rules to help with classroom management and the smooth running of the school day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of your lesson plans for early in the school year should be about setting some rules for your class and helping students know how to follow them. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/315628091_Characteristics_of_Effective_Classroom_Rules_A_Review_of_the_Literature\">Research<\/a> suggests that classroom rules are more successful if they\u2019re:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Positive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specific<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collaborative (with the kids themselves!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On public display<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tied to consequences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><br>Some of your class rules may take inspiration from wider school rules. This can be helpful in getting your students ready to follow the rules in 1st and 2nd grade and later in middle school and high school when behavior expectations will be higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4 top tips for rules that work<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Keep them simple<\/strong><br>For kindergarten students, simple rules are better. It can be a big transition from pre-k or homeschool to formal kindergarten, so make sure your classroom rules don\u2019t overwhelm your students, particularly at the beginning of the school year. Look for things that are similar to preschool classroom rules or rules they\u2019re likely to have at home and might be familiar with.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Keep them sensible<\/strong><br>Focus on practical rules that will create a good <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kamiapp.com\/blog\/running-a-successful-kindergarten-class\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">classroom environment<\/a> rather than rules just for the sake of it. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Here are some examples of things you might like your students to do:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be a good listener<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow directions quickly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use walking feet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use quiet voices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use appropriate hand motions to attract attention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take turns and let others have a say<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use kind words<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respect classroom equipment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take part and try your best when doing school activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try and focus your rules on positive behavior and use language that reflects that. For example, say, \u201cUse your walking feet\u201d instead of \u201cNo running.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For some rules, you may also need to give a little bit more detail. For example, you may need to show your students what a good listener is \u2014 someone who stays quiet and pays attention when the teacher or another student is speaking and doesn\u2019t interrupt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get your class involved<\/strong> <br>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easternct.edu\/center-for-early-childhood-education\/expert-interviews\/creating-classroom-rules-with-children.html\">education expert Dr. Kathryn Castle<\/a> explains: \u201cChildren are more likely to understand the value of rules if they are involved in creating them. They\u2019re more likely to follow rules they\u2019ve had a part in creating because they understand their importance. They\u2019re even more likely to remind other children the rules and to help enforce the rules.\u201d Take time during the first day or week of school to discuss with students what they think the rules should be. You\u2019ll find a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kamiapp.com\/library\/k?term=social+contract\">free printable social contract in the Kami library<\/a> that makes it easy to do this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Have visual prompts<\/strong> <br>Once you\u2019ve decided on your classroom expectations, create a rules poster or print out your social contract and put it up on your classroom bulletin board so everyone can see it. You could also use worksheets to check students\u2019 understanding of the rules which they can then use as a prompt.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>How to reward children for following classroom rules<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have your rules in place, <a href=\"https:\/\/iris.peabody.vanderbilt.edu\/module\/beh2_elem\/cresource\/q2\/p06\/\">setting up a reward system<\/a> can encourage students to stick to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/education\/column-hey-teachers-please-stop-using-behavior-charts-heres\">The idea of reward systems is highly debated<\/a> by teachers and parents and there are mixed views on whether they work. If you do decide to use this system, ensure you set it up carefully and take care not to highlight or shame students in a way that impacts them. For example, if you\u2019re keeping behavior charts for any student, consider keeping them private rather than on display in class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rewards should be tangible and something that children will enjoy. Examples include student of the week certificates (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kamiapp.com\/library\/classroom-management?term=award\">you\u2019ll find some great award templates in the Kami Library<\/a>), classroom dollars that students can earn and then redeem for small items, or a lucky dip where chosen students can pick a prize. You may choose to have a range of rewards to acknowledge good behavior immediately and to recognize consistent good behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rewarding average good behavior over the course of a week or a term (for example, having a certain number of good days or lessons) can acknowledge that every student has off days and help reduce the issue of one bad day ruining behavior that, in general, is acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reward individually so that good children don\u2019t feel held back<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In your class, you\u2019ll always have a range of students, and some will be better behaved than others. Rewarding individual student behavior ensures that good students are recognized, and those that need help are given the right encouragement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reward as a class to help people work together<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside individual rewards, you may want to have a class reward that can be earned if students work together to achieve a goal. This could be a class activity or some shared food, or free time at the end of the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emphasis, especially in the first week of school, should be on encouraging good behavior and learning the rules with a bit of lenience. But sometimes, you may need to discourage negative behavior with consequences like time out or missing out on fun activities. Use these consequences carefully and make sure that the student always understands why they are being given the consequence.
